April 9th, 2009

We have started learning about chickens. We made a circle map about chickens. First, we filled in what we already knew and then we filled in information we learned from books and movies.

Today, we tried some experiments. We squeezed an egg in our hands and
tried to get it to break, but it wouldn't break.

We rolled an egg to see how it rolls. Some people thought it would roll in a circle and some people thought it would roll straight. We graphed what we thought and then we rolled the egg. 14 students thought it would roll straight and 9 students thought it would roll in a circle. We rolled the egg and it rolled straight.

We broke an egg open and examined it like scientists. We saw the skin around the shell, the yolk in the middle and the albumen around the yolk. We learned from a book that the yolk has food for the chick and the albumen is water and food for the chick. We also learned that there is an air space for the chicks to breathe. We drew a picture of an egg and labeled the parts.

On Monday, we are going to put eggs in our incubator and hope that they hatch this year.
